Also the summers in this region are too hot and it would not an ideal time to visit this place during the monsoon as carrying an umbrella or raincoat while exploring the city would be uncomfortable. Ampani Hills

Tourist places in Kalahandi

Ampani Hills are amongst the prime attractions in Kalahandi. The tourists visiting these hills enjoy trekking here. There are also a number of rare species of flora and fauna found in the Haladigundi valley which is located amidst the Ampani Hills. There is also a famous sanctuary known as the Ambapani sanctuary situated at the Behera Reservoir nearby the hills. Several rare species of animals like Sambar, Black panthers and spotted dear can be spotted in this sanctuary.

Shri Ramakrishna Ashram

Shri Ramakrishna Ashram was established in the year 1993 the main motive of which is to teach the people about salvation. It works on the principles of Maa Sarada Devi, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda. The Ashram is divided into two units. One of the units consists of a temple, a mobile dispensary, an old age home, student’s hostel, library and quarters for sadhus and workers. Visitors visiting this Ashram can also take part in the meditation and contemplation activities held here.

Phurlijharan

Phurlijharan is another major tourist attraction in Kalahandi. It is nothing but a 30ft high waterfall located near Bhawanipatna. This ideal picnic spot is amidst a forest and is famous for the multicolored rainbow seen here occasionally.

Mohangiri

Mohangiri which is a small village situated amidst a hill stream known as Kali Ganga is also another major tourist attraction in Kalahandi. This place is quite close to the District of Boudh-Kandhamal. Situated on the bank of the stream in this place is the ruin of an old Shiva Temple which has epigraphic records engraved on its walls and pillars.

Lanjigarh

The village of Lanjigarh which is situated on the south eastern part of Bhawanipatna serves as the headquarters of Lanjigarh Zamindari. The main tourist attraction in this particular village is the Temple of Lord Gopinath and the Goddess Dokari. The Lanjigarh village is also known for the Jhamu Yatra in the month of Chaitra during which the devotees walk on burning charcoal.

Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary

Kalahandi ToursThe Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary which was established in the 1992 is found in the village of Karlapat. This particular sanctuary is also another major tourist attraction in Kalahandi and several rare species of flora and fauna are found here. Some of the animals found in this sanctuary include tiger, barking deer, gaur, nilgai, leopard, sambar and mouse deer.There is also a waterfall called Phurlijharan located nearby this sanctuary. The Khanduala Fall is another popular attraction in the sanctuary which is located on top of a hill is believed to be the home of the Goddess Khandua. Goddess Manikeswari temple is also located close to this sanctuary.

Amathaguda

Amathaguda is a fort which is situated on the right side of the Tel River. Although the fort is completely ruined now, there are huge numbers of tourists who visit this place to catch a glimpse of the old bridge nearby the river, along with the new bridge.

How to reach Kalahandi ?

Transportation is never a problem in Kalahandi. There are good and comfortable means of road and rail network to visit and explore this historical city. The nearest airport to Kalahandi is located in Raipur which is about 200 to 250 km far away and daily flights to all the major cities are available from this airport. There are two national highways namely, NH 26 and NH 27 passing through Kalahandi. There are also luxury night buses available to the major cities including Bhubaneshwar, Raipur, Sambalpur, etc. Kesinga is the main gateway for Kalahandi in terms of rail connectivity which is linked directly to the major cities of India.
